The Chemist was inspired by Croydon pharmacist Jim Burns, who has operated a methadone clinic on Main Street for more than five decades. The artwork honours Burn’s work as a healer in the community, bringing hope to hundreds of people battling addiction, and preventing vulnerable people from falling through the cracks. Drewitt began the process by photographing Jim and simplifying the image in Photoshop. This formed the basis for a five-layer, hand-cut stencil. The paint was applied to the brickwork with aerosol acrylic.
This project was developed through funding from the Maroondah City Council Arts and Cultural Grant Program.
