Silver Rocks and Hidden Treasure is an exhibition at Maroondah Federation Estate that presents a survey of over four decades of Barb Henderson’s artistic practice across painting, drawing, textiles and specifically, Ukrainian pysanky eggs.

The artist’s home, studio and garden in Croydon have served as the arena for the production of an extensive archive reflecting her enduring fascination for processes of observation, perception and depiction of her immediate surroundings.

Occasional road trips with her husband Jim have expanded Henderson’s compositional vocabulary towards representation of unfamiliar places and objects – geological marvels in particular – both real and imagined.

The sharing of stories is of special importance to Henderson, and the lives of her five children, their families, and her friends inflect her ideas and subjects. These exchanges often supply the titles given to her works, including the painting that lends its title to this exhibition.

Silver Rocks and Hidden Treasure is suffused by the artist’s lifelong passion for rendering the appearance of things in colour, always to the naked eye, through approaches that have ranged, intuitively, from the naturalistic to the purely abstract.
