La Machine by Alexander Knox

Abstract timber sculpture featuring suspended geometric shapes on a white frame.

In La Machine, Alexander Knox takes cues from the world of shipping, both in material form and by way of historical reference. The prominent three-holed feature of the sculpture is based on the ‘deadeye’, a piece of nautical equipment used to securely rig a ship. The sculpture also pays homage to the behind-the-scenes work in Theodore Gericault’s 1818-1819 painting The Raft of the Medusa, depicting a shipwreck scene.  With La Machine, Knox considers the mechanics of human interactions and dynamics – a universal theme that plays out daily.

La Machine was donated by artist Alexander Knox for Maroondah’s Public Art Collection.

About the artist

Alexander Knox is a Melbourne-based sculptor of large-scale kinetic light installations, soundscapes and sculpture. The artist’s public practice is highly diverse in form and conceptual in approach, covering large free-standing sculpture, architecturally integrated sculpture, major kinetic light works, interactive video projection, kinetic sculpture, play sculpture and sound works on major projects including hospitals, stadia, museums, highways and other projects both in Australia and overseas.

Knox’s interest lies in engaging with multilayered ideas of community and place through an exploration of a site’s histories, uses and social meanings. He looks for stories of place that include myth, diverse belief systems and speculative narrative exploring perception, identity and subjectivity within the public realm.

The artist has a strong connection with the eastern region of Melbourne, raised in Eltham and accompanying his father on many visits to architectural projects in the area during the seventies. Alexander Knox’s work is now held in public art collections in Maroondah, Dandenong and Yarra Ranges.
