The What-If Trophies

This collection of washi tape and coloured book covering collages in the Realm Library Collectors Cabinets were made while locked-down during the Covid emergency. It was an opportunity for Ringwood artist Raymond Carter to celebrate unfulfilled personal and national achievements with trophies. The use of tape in the works presents an interesting counterpoint to Briony Barr’s collaborative drawing created using tape downstairs in ArtSpace at Realm.  

Trophies are given as rewards for special success and generally taking the form of cups, medals or plaques. Most of the collaged trophies for the What-If Awards are symbolic of those famous cups held aloft after winning major sporting events. Personal achievements for overcoming physical, intellectual or emotional challenges. The collages symbolize a freedom of spirit released after concentrated activity. With the display of this series, the Realm Collectors Cabinets are reimagined as trophy cabinets.  

The What-If Trophies exhibition will be celebrated as part of the Tape Realm opening and closing events.

About the artist

Raymond Carter is a multi-media artist whose practice includes painting, printmaking, drawing, collage, film/video and sculpture. Trained originally as a sculptor/printmaker at RMIT he has recently completed a Master of Contemporary Art and Master of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne University) where he made 2D works using coloured cloth tapes to compose his geometric abstract works. A local artist who has shown paintings in the McGivern Prize twice, he has work in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, various regional galleries, the Silkcut Foundation, Print Council of Australia and the Justin Art House Museum.

Walking and cycling

Realm can be accessed from the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail and is close to the EastLink Trail and Heathmont Rail Trail.


Bike parking is available in Eastland's Town Square car park.


Public transport

Realm is located opposite Ringwood Station and the Ringwood bus interchange, with direct access to the Belgrave and Lilydale train lines.

Parking

The closest parking to Realm is at Eastland's Town Square car park (Level 3M, Entry Z).

  • If arriving via Ringwood Bypass, enter Eastland from Ringwood Street at West Gate 5.
  • If arriving via Warrandyte Road, enter Eastland via East Gate 6.

Eastland runs a paid parking system. Parking is free for the first three hours, charges apply after this time. View Eastland parking rates.

Accessibility

  • Accessible parking spaces available on the other side of Ringwood Town Square (Eastland Level 3), approximately 60m from Realm entry.
  • Accessible toilets available on every level.
  • Changing Places accessible toilet available on Level 1.
  • Internal lifts available to provide ease of access to every level.
