Tape Realm is a large-scale collaborative drawing project by artist Briony Barr, created with colourful tape across the walls of ArtSpace at Realm.
Inspired by the geometric shapes and patterns found throughout Realm, this interactive artwork invites people of all ages to work together to create something unexpected. No drawing experience is needed. Simply follow a few easy instructions, add your own lines of tape, and watch the artwork grow as more people contribute.
The sound design for Tape Realm was created by composer Patrick Telfer who will use tape loops in a performance and Siwei Wong (electronic harp) during the opening and closing events. The musicians will respond to the evolving artwork on the walls while it is created during the opening event and pulled down during the closing “undrawing” event before being reassembled into a sculpture.
Visit during Realm opening hours to take part or book a session with artist-in-residence Briony Barr between 18 and 26 September. From 27 September to 1 November, arts workers will continue developing the artwork with visitors to ArtSpace.
Tape Realm explores how simple rules, shared creativity and collaboration can transform a blank space into a vibrant artwork that changes overtime.
Free school holiday workshops
Join us during the school holidays and help create Tape Realm. Guided by simple instructions, children will add lines to a large-scale drawing alongside artist Briony Barr and other participants.
No drawing experience is needed. These fun, hands-on sessions encourage creativity, collaboration and play while exploring how simple patterns can grow into something surprising and complex. Suitable for children aged 7 to 12 years. Parents need to stay inside Realm during the process and are encouraged to take part.

Storytimes, Realm Library
Realm Library will run two themed story times exploring patterns and colours in association with Tape Realm.
- Wednesday 16 September, 11am to 11.30am: Toddler Storytime (ages 1 to 3 years)
- Friday 18 September, 10am to 1.30pm: Preschool Program (ages 3 to 6 years)
No bookings necessary.
Free community workshops

No drawing experience is needed. These sessions are for adults and young people older than 7 years. Children aged 7 to 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.

About the artist
Briony Barr is a visual-conceptual artist who uses process-based drawing (individual, collaborative, live, expanded) to explores ideas around structure, emergence and the effect of different boundaries and generative limits. She regularly collaborates with scientists, writers, musicians, dancers and groups of people on projects ranging from large-scale, participatory-drawings, to live-art and performance, to workshops, picture books and graphic novels.
