Future Foundations: Poster as protest celebrates the past, present and future of political posters and print making. Posters have been a prominent feature of the urban environment for centuries. Carrying every conceivable combination of image and text, no journey through the streets of Melbourne is without a poster of some shape or form.

Allied with the rise in social awareness of issues such as women’s liberation, First Nations land rights, LGBTQIA+ rights and environmentalism since the 1960s, artists and printmakers connected with these movements have capitalised on the potential for posters to reach large and diverse audiences. Harnessing the tools of graphic design and typography combined with the intense colours of screen-printing inks, the poster has played a vital role as a vehicle for peaceful protest.

In this exhibition, current and foundational works sit side-by-side to demonstrate that many of the environmental, political and social concerns of the past still prove relevant today, as issues recur, and history repeats itself. Future Foundations highlights the ongoing active role that the art of poster making takes in giving voice to the issues that matter to society at large.

Curated by Troppo Print Studio, Future Foundations brings together posters by Australian print collectives and individual artists from foundational to contemporary practice.

The Realm building is in Ringwood Town Square and has a white diamond facade.

  • Parking available at Eastland Shopping Centre. When arriving via Ringwood Bypass, enter from Ringwood Street at West 5. If you arrive from Warrandyte Road, use entry East 6. Parking is free for the first 3 hours.
  • Public transport
    Realm is across the road from Ringwood Train Station
