During July through to September, Wyreena’s Arts Lounge will feature two new exhibitions from Wi Sook Kim and Tanya Loh.
Kim’s abstract paintings find harmony in diversity, reflecting the artist’s migrant experience embracing and joining two cultures when she migrated from South Korea at the age of 65. Loh’s works feature bold, contrasting colours and explore the depth of human relations and experiences, often hiding within superficially charming scenes.
About the artists
Wi Sook Kim
Harmony from diversity
Kim’s journey as an elderly migrant, who left her home country later in life at the age of 65, has deeply influenced her artistic exploration of 'harmony from diversity.' Through her artworks, she seeks to express the profound belief that embracing diversity and differences can bring a vibrant, warm, and dynamic energy to our lives, rather than leaving them monotonous and static.
Australia’s gracious effort to embrace diversity and difference has also been a deep source of inspiration for Kim’s art. As Kim has become part of this multicultural society - creating a new family and sharing life with people from many nations - she has come to deeply feel and appreciate the continuing legacy of harmony. This profound sense of gratitude and inspiration is what Kim has poured into her artworks: a celebration of unity in difference, and of beauty born from the coexistence of diverse lives and stories.
Kim believes that when we approach cultural and racial differences with an open heart and a respectful mindset, we create a vibrant warmth akin to the freshness of spring—a harmonious blend of seemingly mismatched colours that come together beautifully. This concept of harmony through diversity is something she aims to capture and convey in her work.
Tanya Loh
Somewhere down in the south of Spain
Tanya Loh is a self-taught artist for whom artistic practice equals catharsis. Inspired by a search for meaning, painting gives permission to reflect upon, release and ultimately come to terms with challenges imposed by life. Tanya’s paintings are deeply personal.
Tanya’s work is characterised by intense colour and rendering from dark to light, light to dark. Tanya’s technique in the medium of oil, requires much layering and working the oils into lustrous colours. It takes hours of work to produce an apparently effortless result.
Tanya’s interest extends far beyond the decorative. Her work explores the world of human relations, experiences and feelings, more often than not, of a melancholy nature. Simple objects, the horizon, and sometimes figures, hint at a wider, more complex story.
Why do we run away? Why do we want to run away? Is it something we have done? Something we haven’t done? Does it hurt too much to stay? Do we need to free ourselves, from something or someone? Is it a move of strength or is it cowardice? Is it regret or a promise of something better? Are we running away for Love? Have we lost love?
